Photojournalism
Although I am more familiar with AP style than camera settings, I have managed to accumulate a small portfolio over the course of the past couple months. However, I have always worked with photographers to seamlessly and creatively incorporate their work into my publication.

Photos on the Job
These are some photos I've taken while doing general reporting.

Unlikely match
In his mothers wedding dress, LHS graduate Connor Mullen stands waiting for matrimony with the Chesty Lion mascot during senior week.

Fighting for First Chair
Poised to play, junior Lily Havener waits to be called to audition for the Northeast Kansas Music Educators Association district orchestra.

Behind the scenes
Adjusting her camera, senior Naomi Sui Pang gets ready to film a video segment on Senior Sunrise as the sun makes its way over the horizon.

Working for Walz
Lawrence resident Virgina Musser holds up her middle school yearbook, showing off the photo of vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, who taught in her middle school.

Needoh Craze
Holding out her fidget, senior Ava Lee poses with her own NeeDoh Cube, which rose in popularity at Lawrence High School at the beginning of the 2025 school year.
Photo of the Month
The EIC's work together to pick an image that is both visually appealing and coordinates with its sister page — the cover
I worked with my co-editors to select the first image because of its unique lighting and the unusually striking subject of a glowing violin bow.
My co-editors and I chose the second photo because of the dynamic color and angle of this image. The iridescent blue of the jacket easily stood out of the crowd.

From Vision to Camera
As an editor, there are instances when you stop and realize: Wait. I don't have a visual component for that page!
As a result, there have been several times where I have gone beyond selecting photos and had to set up a photoshoot instead.
While I did not take these photos myself, it took a lot of work to pull off these last minute photo sessions.

Staring suspiciously, senior Zana Kennedy observes her masked Co-Editor-in-Chief senior Bryndal Hoover as they monitor a photography session together

After assigning a story about our all female lighting crew, I realized we had no visual component.
I pulled a member of the lighting crew from class, and brought her and a photographer to the lighting booth where we got a solid set of portrait photos as she worked the lighting board.

Our staff makes a point in providing summer coverage. Sometimes students we write about are able to provide a photo, but other times we have to set up an alternative.
This story was about students who participated in a hospital internship over the summer, and none of them had quality images from the experience.
This setup included finding lab coats, an available science lab and beakers. We posed the students to look like they were doing scientific research in a hospital setting for the photo illustration

Sometimes, photographers miss an event entirely. After no one shot a local prom dress event, we were left with no photos for the story our staff had written.
That's when we had the idea to pose prom dresses on mannequins. A frenzy of collecting dresses and mannequins turned a moment of panic into a beautiful series of pictures.
