Web and Social Media Design

We are living in the digital world of journalism. While I am passionate about my print publication, I recognize that online content is the most accessible form of news. From publishing stories online to following board meetings on social media, I always make sure that the physical newspaper is digitally translated.

Covering Local Gun Violence Live

During my junior year, two shooting deaths happened within a two-mile radius of my high school's campus in close succession. I stepped up to help cover it live.

This process included attending an in-person police press conference, interviewing police, and creating a multimedia post for social media all within the span of a couple hours.

Gun violence is a national issue, affecting the lives of children across the country. However in recent years it has become increasingly relevant to Lawrence High School.

In the past three years, our school has had four current or recent students die of gun violence. Additionally, both high schools have undergone several lockdown drills due in response to various degrees of threat.

In this process, I collaborated closely with other staffers to create graphics emphasizing the significance of the coverage. This type of multimedia storytelling is extremely important to quickly relay a message to young readers with short attention spans. Maybe the information on these graphics even convinced them to read the whole story.

School Board Meetings:
Live Coverage

Since sophomore year, I have been actively involved in The Budget’s coverage of school board meetings in USD 497.

Whether it was tuning in to a school board livestream after getting home from ballet rehearsal or reporting live on the scene, I have been committed to informing my community about our school district's policies.

The process also includes contributing to live tweeting coverage. These quotes would additionally contribute to the story about that particular board meeting.

Publishing Online Content

Going into senior year, I was the only returning editor-in-chief who had any editing experience.

During this process, I got the opportunity to mentor several of my peers on the inner workings of the four different journalism systems, including online content. During the summer, however, several breaking news stories in needed coverage.

Because the new online editors had no access to the website login, this duty fell to me. I went through the process of formatting stories on our SNO website, selecting media and publishing.

Social Media Graphics

I co-run the orchestra page for my school. I made this graphic announcing the members who were accepted into the Northeast Kansas Music Educators Association District Orchestra.

As other music groups announced who was accepted into other district music ensembles, my editors and I had the idea to place off the information into one place. I worked with my staff to combine the names from my graphic with the rest of the graphics made by our high schools music programs so students could view all of the musicians admitted to district ensembles in one post located on the journalism's Instagram page.
